Sinofar and Giroc

In 'Duel' Sinofar tells Travis not to return but nothing similar is said to Blake - does this mean that Blake is free to return? What would happen if the two (or several) people transported down to the planet did come to a 'compromise of sorts'? (Though having 'no solution being reached' for either pair of participants is one of the strong points of B7.) Would Sinofar and Giroc be able to leave their haunting place? (Presumably the planet was so polluted by the weapons used/so much of the available resources were used in the wars that the Federation/other visitors would not be able to make use of it.) CD review: Dalek Empire 1

Dalek Empire 1 Invasion of the Daleks I'll note first that while this story is set in the Dr Who universe, it does not feature Dr Who himself. It's a look at what was going on elsewhere, and other people's battles against the Daleks. The CD is part 1 of a four part serial. I gather from Judith's comments that there are prequels as well, which I'm glad to hear because I kept getting the feeling that I didn't have some of the background information. There was enough in the CD to keep me going, but I sometimes felt as if I'd come in on the second episode. That aside, I enjoyed this CD, and am looking forward to the rest of the story. The CD is about 70 minutes long, nearly as long as three of the TV episodes with the credits and teasers removed, and this gives time to build up the plot without having to put in a cliff-hanger. While I've thoroughly enjoyed the Big Finish CDs that used the "25 minute and cliff-hanger" episode structure, the longer format seems more appropriate where we don't have the familiar cast, and need to be introduced to all of the characters as well as the plot. Excellent cast, and a script written by someone who knows how to write for audio. Good solid plot, using scenes that don't have too many characters to easily follow by voice alone, and with clear changes from one scene to the next. This might not seem worthy of comment, but I only managed to get halfway through _The Sevenfold Crown_ before giving up and reading a new fanzine instead... It's a nicely complex story, tackling the issues of how to behave during and after invasion. This CD sets the scene for a look at whether it's better to die and deprive the enemy of your labour, or to collaborate with the occupiers in the hope of being able to fight back later. I'm looking forward to seeing how this is developed in the next CD. There are also some good observations about how one can unwittingly help the enemy. One of the things I particularly liked was the characterisation of the Daleks. This is a hive society with a rigid hierarchy, but it is still made up of individuals rather than mindless drones. There is also an intelligent explanation of why the Daleks have enslaved the human population of the planet instead of simply wiping them out. And then, of course, there's the reason I bought the CD. Gareth Thomas plays Kalendorf, a man injured during the invasion and taken for slave labour. He turns out to be more than he seems. Excellently played. And being the low sort of person I am, I *thoroughly* enjoyed the line "Hold me", said to the female lead <grin>. If the rest of the set holds up to the promise of the first CD, then I can recommend this series. -- Julia Jones "Science is not about building a body of known 'facts'. Oh. I thought there would be loads of comments on this on the list this morning - perhaps I'm too bright and early. Of course one is *scandalised* that B7 only got to number 6. Behind Thunderbirds for goodness sake. On the other hand, one is simply delighted to have the chance to admire Gareth, Paul, Jackie, Brian Spider, Og and Jarriere, all within seconds of each other. And one notes with approval that the commentators, for a wonder, seemed to vaguely have got the hang of what B7 was about. One finally notes that male cultural commentators like Kim Newman and Paul Morley seem to have cottoned on to the whole subtext thingy, and that clips were chosen accordingly. All in all I'll give it 8 out of 10, but then my expectations were rock bottom. Alison

Actually, no, I don't think so. As has been pointed out, it's more to do with what they can show clips of, and what their pundits talk about - possibly which they're most entertaining about. The Top Ten series has always been somewhat bizarre in its selections. But even so, I'm not surprised that B5 wasn't there. Everything in the list is Old, with the exception of Red Dwarf, and that was a prime-time sitcom. I believe that much of the decline of quality of media sf is because it was the sort of stuff watched by kids two decades ago, who are now running TV companies, and think that stuff's just for kids - they don't watch it themselves, and don't think it deserves the time and effort "real" drama gets - sorry, off on a rant there. Point is, most of it's had twenty-odd years to seep through public consciousness and take root, sometimes spawning collectable Dinky toys en route, and it comes from an era when you watched that stuff because you didn't like what was on either of the other two channels. Nowadays, B5 is a kids-only thing that's purely ephemeral, and lost in the noise of the satellite and cable channels. steve
