My husband, Dan, ended up doing them. We had just bought a DVD burner (they're avaiable in Japan for reasonable prices, if still rather large and clunky). We watched the first four episodes on tape and then burned them. After the first four episodes, we started burning them directly to DVD and watching them that way, so the DVD copy was a clean as we could get. Unfortunately, we had to guess when the episode ended and turn on the tv to check so we could stop the burning, which led to us sometimes seeing a few seconds of the end of episodes. Not usually a problem, except when we checked "Blake" and got a brief shot of Avon standing in red lighting raising a gun--"Argh! Shut it off! Shut it off!"
I've been tracking the progress of recordable DVDs in the hopes of doing that very thing. I've also pondered the possibility of having my tapes transfered by professionals, but I wasn't sure they'd dub copyrighted material.
I'm not up to doing a flood of stuff, but if anyone wantes to replace an especially poor copy and is willing to pay for tapes and shipping from Japan (and we don't have PAL here), we could do that. Mind you, the copy is just as poor as the original new video tapes--nothing cleaned up or anything.
