Okay, my old B7 fanfic doesn't generate rapturous reviews often (there wasn't ever that much of it to begin with), but...here's one reason that writers don't do this.
This would be the process for me: I'd have to go figure out what zine a story was in (because I don't have a perfect memory, and I might recall which zine it went to, but not specifically which issue) and then try to get current contact information for the editor to find out whether or not the zine is still in print. And *then* retype the thing, because a LOT of my B7 fanfic was written on a typewriter, and much of the rest of it was
on
my ancient and long-deceased Macintosh. And I don't own a scanner.
And most of my fannish time these days (which is quite limited, sadly) is devoted to trying to write fanfic in fandoms that I'm currently *active*
in
(I love B7, but I no longer write it, and only read the fiction posted on the lists), and I'd be reluctant to give up writing time to retype old
fanfic.
I can understand the frustration -- I really can -- but it's not anything malicious that's keeping some of us from making older fanfic available.
Might I make a suggestion then if your like Michelle Wren-Moyer ask and see if anyone on the list has the out of print zines and a scanner and see if THEY can scan your fic into their computer and post it for you. That way the time it takes to retype every B7 fic you ever wrote for an out of print zine won't be wated actually retyping it. It would also help newbies who like me are isolated from other fans geographicly and who can't afford the zines. Also it'd be nice if those writers with webpages with their fics on it would post the URLs to the bookmarks of this list if you haven't already. I understand it takes time to retype stories and sometimes it would just be a whole lot easier on you if you had saved your stories to disk whenever you had the time to do so. But those fans that have scanners and the zines could help too lessen the load as it were. Though I said it's unfair for a lot of stories to go to zines and not to the net I wasn't trying to be rude or annoying to anyone. You have to understand that I have only meet two other Blake's 7 fan in person one was a teacher at LCCC where I was attending colage courses and she was kind enough to let me borrow some of her tapes of B7 for a while. The other I meet at a con and he talked to me for several hours on the subject of net fic and fanfic in general he was the one who told me about Blake's 7 fanfic being online. I had never bothered to look for B7 fanfic before that. I had known about fanfic for a few years mainly Forever Knight, Babylon 5 and a few other shows that I was watching at the time. I had not thought that there was any Blake's 7 fanfic at all at the time. So before I learned of B7 fanfic I learned that fanfic for many other shows was to be found on the internet before I learned of zines. The net is where I have always gotten my fanfic and I happen to like being able to go to a website and read fic straight from the web. I never meant to say that it was rude for writers to put their stories in zines first and only. Just that it's nice for writers to post their stories to the net when they can. I happen to write fanfic myself but all my fanfic is saved to disk, some of it I write only for myself to read because the stories are not that good and some of the characters are almost always out of character. Anyway if I insulted anyone with the 'its not fair' bit I'm sorry. Thank you and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL!!!
