As with most things it's the *degree* that's important. There's nothing wrong, for example, with liking watching or playing football, but someone who follows say Manchester United round the country, can name their teams and record over the past 20 years, and feels that physical aggression is a warranted response towards the followers of other teams is unlikely to win my approval.
Surely the first two are separable from the second. Having a season ticket and being able to cite your team's record is no better or worse than going to conventions and being able to recite the entire script of Star One. Obviously physical violence is a completely unacceptable. (And supporting Man Utd is, frankly, a bit sad).
The polite and sensible option is to live and let live. These things always seem bizarre on the outside and quite normal to those who like them - whether it be sci-fi, football or whatever.

P.S. Not living in Devon anymore I didn't see a local paper, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't at least one Blake's Heaven headline after we stuffed York at the weekend !
