In Space Fall Vila only mentions the bank fraud, not the dead visa seller. The Ultra also only mention the fraud. This leads me to believe that Avon was only convicted for the fraud, not for the killing (which, a capable lawyer could argue, was in self defence as the visa seller shot first). Possibly the authorities a) didn't regard the killing of the visa seller as bad as the fraud, and decided to prosecute Avon only for the "graver" crime;
That's how I see it... The Federation does not seem to particularly value human life, while money maketh the dictatorship go round...
This killing actually really troubles me, being a killing my a civilian on
the
run rather than as part of the whole rebellion deal. (Not that those
killings
don't trouble me too, on occaison.) It's ironic as "Gold," which has even
less
justifiable killings, is one of my favourite episodes.... I guess I just like to see the first season crew as fairly innocent and idealistic - Jenna and Avon's careful cynicism aside - while by the fourth season, the crew - except perhaps for Vila - seems far less morally grounded and more erratic and desperate and self-interested to me. (This is not necessarily a bad thing
for
the show, just - different.)
It might also explain Avon's answer to the whole "Could you ever kill
someone"
thing - if this was the first life he took, it may not yet be something he
has
come to terms with. Perhaps saying, "oh, yeah, I offed someone who got in my way before I was captured" would make him look tougher, but assuming he still feels some kind of shock and guilt, I can imagine him not wanting to admit to it. Later, of course, when the body count had mounted up...
I think it's more likely that he didn't want to admit to a murder - and I see it as murder - than that he made it up later to seem tough/devoted to Anna.
