After thinking about this, it occurred to me there's one reason many of us side with Avon over Blake.
Blake was gone for two years, during which time Avon became our main, POV character. We saw much of what happened through his eyes. By the time Blake shows up again, we are acutely aware of what's going on with Avon on this little trip down disaster lane even if we still have to debate what in the world Blake thought he was doing.
Our emotions were already there. The justifications are afterthoughts.
Hm. That has absolutely no effect with me. I was annoyed with Blake by the end of the first episode, and attached to Avon before the end of S1. I don't approve of *bashing* Blake (as in excessive ragging on him and trying to make him out worse than he is) but I very legitimately do not approve of most of his methods and some of his aims. There isn't any law that says that everyone must like Blake, or conversely, that everyone must like Avon. B7 fandom does, however, seem to attract a disproportionate share of the type of person who would like Avon. That doesn't seem overly surprising, somehow.
