Truth to tell, I rather like Sand, mainly for its atmospheric sets, not to mention Avon's horror at Orac's declaration of love. I also rate Sarcophagus highly, though I know a lot of fans hate it. I can only say, I loved it when I first saw it. I remember trying to work out what the dreamlike opening sequence meant, in relation to the rest of the episode. The writer, Tanith Lee, was something of a fan herself I believe, and produced a fine fantasy novel with openly ackowledged avatars or Vila and Avon. I bought it in paperback in 1980 from a small independant shop called Fantast (Medway). Anyone else heard of it?
_Kill the Dead_, and it's fairly well-known on this list, although it appears to be out of print in both the US and the UK editions.
Tanith Lee was a big fan of B7 when it was first broadcast, according to an interview with her sometime around 1983 (for those who've asked, I've finally managed to resuscitate my backup CDs, so with any luck I'll be able to get at the transcript of it now). Sarcophagus is essentially a piece of fanfic by a pro script writer. Sand less so, because she wasn't available to do the rewrites, and it's more heavily influenced by Chris Boucher.
Sarcophagus is one of those episodes that fans generally either love or hate. I love it, although I can see Chris Boucher's point about not wanting more than one of that style per series.
