There have been plenty of US DVDs which had things that were missing from the European editions, which is one reason why so many Europeans have chipped players...
I recently bought a multi region player by mail order after taking some advice from people on lyst (waves to Steve). The very first disc I bought was region 1 and it turned out to be RCE (regionally encoded) and it wouldn't play. I phoned the retailer and they told me how to 'adjust' the player to read RCE discs.
The adjustment was very easy, I managed it on the second attempt and now it seems that I can play any discs, any region whether or not they are RCE. My comment therefore, (for what it is worth) is that it may be better to pay a little extra to go to a shop that will provide after care, rather than buying a 'bargain' from the supermarket as I nearly did.
Incidently, some internet suppliers of DVDs will warn you if a disc is RCE, but some do not. After reading some posts on a DVD type list it seems that the new RCE discs can be a major problem for players sold as multi region.
