I have no problem with the sand. It's Servalan getting soppy that makes my suspension of disbelieve snap.
There are bits that I find very out of character; I think I try to explain them away by the sand having some sort of effect. Well, if it can affect machinery and kill people, then I don't see why it can't do some mind woo-woo on them as well.
