Or simply the only one Mellanby happened to find before she was finished off by the elements or the local fauna. If the locals followed a custom of exposing unwanted newborns, there would be a fairly narrow window of opportunity for rescuing one. How narrow depends on how harsh the conditions were, and how many predators were around.
