Hi - I've recently (re)subscribed to the list after a gap of nearly two years.
I suspect that I am the only Exeter City supporter on the list and feel the need to make a few observations about our fearless leader. (Noel that is, not Roj)
1/ Noel Blake continues a recent tradition of sci-fi connections to our managers. Last year the supporters club news letter did a piece comparing Peter Fox to Fox Mulder, pointing out that Dana Scully was a much better sidekick than Noel, and that as adversaries go, various Space Aliens were more interesting than Plymouth Argyle !
2/ Exeter's hated local rivals, Plymouth Argyle are little green men. (Well, they wear green shirts). Roj Blake was involved in the celebrated local derby between Federation FC and Andromeda United - thus creating a link between leaders called Blake and little malevolent green blobs of protoplasm.
3/ Blake's Seven couldn't afford decent special effects. Exeter can't afford decent players.
4/ Noel Blake used to play for Aston Villa, thus giving him a second connection with a well known 1970s TV series.
5/ Roj Blake fought an ultimately doomed battle. Hopefully these (rather forced) analogies break down at this point.
6/ In the book "Power, Corruption and Pies" which covers five years of the best articles from 'When Saturday Comes' there's a cartoon of a replica strip with the number 7 and the name "Blake's" above it - illustrating the year when such kits became ubiquitous. So Harriet is quite right, the programme has remained in the psyche of a great deal of football fans, which is unsurprising when you think about it. A lot of men my age have memories of getting interested in football about the time Blake's 7 was on.
Stephen Date.
