Otherwise I watch a lot of other SF shows (any old rubbish that's going according to Steve K <g>), but the only other fandoms I'm actively involved in are Due South and West Wing - DS is borderline genre since ghosts are canonical, but not really. I don't exactly know myself what the attraction is there - I choose a fun, witty, optimistic little show and then write angst into it. Maybe I just like being subversive :-)
I like this show although I don't know if I count as a fan. As far as the B7 appeal goes, Avon and Ray I have a lot in common (cynics, a background environment where corruption is taken for granted, partners they didn't want who reek of naive optimism, girlfriends with mixed loyalties whose deaths they're somewhat responsible for, a really neat vehicle that was all his but that got blown up as the only way to defeat the bad guys, etc). The ongoing joke being that, while Avon seems to spend half his time finding out he was (if anything) being too lenient in his character judgements, Ray has to deal with Fraser always being right.
In one episode, they're trying to hitch a ride and all the cars just drive right past. Finally, Ray pulls out his gun and says he stopping the next car no matter what. Fraser feels this isn't the way to do it. Then, while they're fighting over the gun, a car finally pulls over and the driver, in a very strong Canadian accent, asks if they need help.
Ray turns to Fraser and tells him he comes from a sick country.
Oh, no, I'm now reimagining all the B7 episodes with Fraser and Ray.
Fraser: Servalan, you may be a meglomaniacal psychopath with delusions of grandeur, but I think, if you look deep down, you'll find that you've always been motivated by your belief in the Federation, the ideals it originally stood for before it became a nonstop juggernaut of conquest and exploitation, a political system that could unite all humanity and protect them in a hostile universe. Knowing that, I don't think you can cold bloodedly gun down two unarmed men whose only goal is to help and protect others.
Servalan: Hah! [Steps forward to get a clear shot, trips and accidentally shoots herself]
Ray: [Sarcastically] Looks like you really called that one, Bennie.
Fraser: [Missing sarcasm] It's a tragic ending, Ray. The only way she could appease her conscience while still living up to her duty as an officer was to shoot herself.
Ray: [Not believing what he just heard] You _believe_ that?
Fraser: Well, of course, Ray. She hiked through these woods in high heels and, just when she was about to shoot us, stepped right into the deer scat she slipped on. What else could she have been doing?
The Ray as Avon, Fraser as Blake diagram. Come to think of it, Ray shot Fraser, too, didn't he?
I'm not sure, but I think this makes the wolf Cally (nonhuman life form with strange communication skills, loyal to Fraser but possibly smarter).
