There is a rather Avonic character in the Glen Cook 'Black Company' series, by the name of Raven.
I doubt he's a deliberate avatar, but he will appeal to fans of sarcastic, black-dressed dangerous bastards with unhappy pasts (betrayed by a woman, surprise, surprise) and a tendancy to get too involved with other people's crusades. Plus, at least the first three books are nice, solid and fairly gritty fantasy with a very good atmosphere and some memorable characters.
