They were used to the radiation levels. He wasn't. The exposure he *did* have would have killed him if he hadn't gotten medicine for it. Staying behind was not an option on any level.
Whatever the System thought DSV-1 was supposed to be used for, it probably went to some awfully dodgy planets. Why didn't they have whizzo anti-radiation planet exploring outfits on board? (They must have expected living beings and not just robots or androids or cyborgs to be on board, or they wouldn't have a thousand person-years worth of concentrated food.)
