Strikes me as more a knowledge of first-aid (or even a basic paramedical course) than serious medical skill - or maybe he was a nurse?
BTW, that's one thing I always *liked* about Breakdown, none of the crew suddenly disclosed a medical background when needed. They clearly still don't have much idea what they're doing with that equipment.
Also BTW, that rather unnerves me when Blake, in Orac, suggests that they do the operation on Ensor. Sure, he doesn't have any choice at that stage, but the idea of Our Heroes messing around with scalpels is a tad worrying. OTOH, what with battle wounds, they've hopefully had a fair bit of practice in the mudical unit since Breakdown - there *is* a practical reason for all Avon's fanfictional Suffering, you know ...
<But perhaps this is just because the script writers couldn't find anything more meaningful for him to do,>
Just 'cause in the episode they *wrote* for him, he spent the whole of it strapped down and twitching ...

And I love Avon's reaction when Blake suggests that, well, maybe he can look up how to do it... The look on his face is great. Even Avon's ego isn't up to the belief that he can perform brain surgery with no training.

I imagine that that would probably be a *much* simpler and more routine operation than repairing the limiter, though.

I don't think he's too thrilled with Blake's "Jim'll fix it" approach to delegation either.
