The second-hand bookshop down the road from me often has copies of the various avatar novels - I got not one but two hardback copies of _I Strahd_, for a start:-) I'm willing to buy books for people, although be warned that even though the books are second-hand, by the time you add international postage it will cost as much as a new book. It's not worth it unless you're after one that's out of print, or a specific edition (and no, I've never seen a copy of the Daw edition of _Kill the Dead_ with the to-die-for cover art). If it's in print, get it from Amazon or from the guerrilla bookshop owner known as ppint.
Only don't ask just yet because I'm about to be away for a while.

I actually had two copies of this at one point, and gave one away.
Julia, let me know when we're next remotely in the same area, and I'll bring my copy along with me.

Oh. Is there more than one Daw edition, or is there a reprint from another publisher? Because I just managed to get a copy last month, and I'm curious as to just how lucky I've actually been. ;-)
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy. It's a satisfying little story, if not terribly complex, and I've set it on my favourites shelf, next to Friedman's Coldfire Trilogy and C.J. Cherryh's Morgaine books.
Mistral
There is a rather Avonic character in the Glen Cook 'Black Company' series, by the name of Raven.
I doubt he's a deliberate avatar, but he will appeal to fans of sarcastic, black-dressed dangerous bastards with unhappy pasts (betrayed by a woman, surprise, surprise) and a tendancy to get too involved with other people's crusades. Plus, at least the first three books are nice, solid and fairly gritty fantasy with a very good atmosphere and some memorable characters.

Yeah, me, too! Mine's got a picture of Parl surrounded by ghosts and skeletony creatures (one of which is grabbing at his leg). Pretty cool picture... And I wasn't looking for any particular edition when I hunted up a copy, either. (For those who are looking, I didn't find it too difficult to find... I went through Bibliofind, but they've merged with Amazon now, so I'd just suggest looking there.)

I liked it a *lot*, although I can't talk about the main reason why, 'cause it'd be an unforgivable spoiler. :)

Yeah, I'm guessing that's the same reason that I found it satisfying. (Satisfying being Mistral-ese for I liked it a lot, but I'm not going to assume anybody else will, because my reasons in this case are totally subjective.) And I love the Vila avatar; he was the right combination of strengths and weaknesses, IMO.
