Market Niches Several buy-side clients are successful niche-finders. As you can see in the buy-sides searches below, good and hungry players, in gardening for instance, find that acquisitions are a quick way to build strength, scale their processes, access more clients, and fend off competition. The common points of those businesses are the low debt levels. This fact allows them to go after more troubled competitors or related companies and buy them up for relatively cheap prices. Acquired companies on the other hand, often suffer from cash-problems and banks have recently been reluctant to offer further credit lines. Most of those businesses also follow a common pattern of consolidating size in one region, and then trying to expand domestically and internationally at the same time. Winners are becoming very good at integrating new structures, and have a portfolio management attitude. This model of development is quite successful, Some pitfalls sometimes appear when the founder or growth-CEO goes away or retires. It is important at this crucial time that the company has a size allowing for a more managerial approach, instead of an entrepreneurial. Most of the time, clients want to bring in someone from headquarters, who is senior enough to have broad product and process knowledge. For sales you add one local specialist that you need to find, hire and train. And administration is performed by a BPO boutique. Throw in a secretary and one or two junior to help, and people costs are going way up to have a fully own and operating structure. Then you need space, for storage or operations, lodging, transportation, marketing etc. Furthermore, in mature markets especially, to bring in a new solution or a new competitor takes time. In developping markets, most of the time products need adaptation. The investments from head-quarter are thus very important for a rather long period. Notably so in Japan. A Number of venture try to address this, with shared resources for instance. Purely thinking in ROI terms, we sometimes advice clients to simply purchase a local distributor, competitor, or related company. In Japan currently valuations are low as population and many markets are shrinking. Investing in a company brings in revenues, clients, introductions, reputation from day 1. We currently believe that most product companies would benefit from buying a local organization. For services or technology, this is more complex. Companies are better off trying to bring in talents to sell and interface with clients, and leave as much people costs as possible outside, using technology-intensive processes.
