Man ser återkommande bilderna på hur många procent luftmotstånd varje cyklist har med några småbilder... Roligare om man lägger ihop dom... :)
När vi var ute i Åkersberga på ekomässan och visade upp några liggcyklar så visade mig Dennis (Cykeldennis) en intressant sak som han ritat och det var en 3-hjulig ihopfällbar variant som var då utskuren i aluminum. Uppstartskostnaden vara några tusen och sen så var det i stort sett materialet för ramen som kostade. Han pratade om att det kunde bli ännu billigare om man gjöt ramarna, men att formen skulle då vara lite dyrare att ta fram. Något man kanske kan ta till sig om några sätter sig i en grupp och disskutera framtagandet att kolla på utskurna ramar med vatten eller då ta fram en ram som går att gjuta, och inte då enbart att ramarna måste svetsas ihop från rör. Det verkade som det skulle vara ekonomiskt försvarbart att göra detta med en svensk firma som kapar ut ramen eller gjuter den och inte beställa allt ifrån Asien. :)
I presentationen av liggcyklar skriver vi att liggcykeln aldrig är snabbare i uppförsbackar. Är det verkligen så i alla backar?
En liggcykel, och ännu mer en velomobil, har ju ett mycket lägre luftmotstånd, och det har den ju även i uppförsbackarna. Det måste ju innebära att den energi som sparas tack vare lågt luftmotstånd kan användas till att flytta ekipagets vikt uppåt, vilket man ju gör i uppförsbackar. Speciellt gäller det flacka backar, där man orkar hålla en sådan hastighet att luftmotståndet är en stor del av det totala motståndet. I min omgivning finns det många flacka backar där jag bevisligen kör fortare uppför än jag gjorde med ståcykeln innan jag blev liggist!
Ett vanligt specialfall av branta backar är cykelunderfarter. Men där tar man fart nerför och tack vare det låga luftmotståndet tappar man inte den farten utan rullar elegant uppför på andra sidan. Lägesenergi blir rörelseenergi nerför och rörelseenergin vid botten blir lägesenergi igen.
Det är väl bara vid branta backar, där farten är så låg att luftmotståndet är en mycket liten del av det totala motståndet, som liggcykeln inte har någon fördel?
Jag känner att ju varmare i sadeln jag blir desto svårare blir det för folk att hänga med. Men i början utav ens liggande karriär så är man långsammare i alla lägen. Vissa backar har jag fortfarande svårt med att hålla farten om jag inte har någon att ta rygg på. Men det går bättre och bättre.
Senaste jag körde hem från jobbet så var det en "racercyklist" som körde förbi mig vid en liten "puckel" på vägen (hyfsatt brant uppför och utför) och jag hade inga tankar först att "tävla". Men eftersom killen småflinade när han cyklade om mig så hängde jag på uppför Tranebergsbron, lång och seg backe.
Killen kämpade och kämpade och kollade både över vänster och höger axel för att se hom jag hängde på... Till slut gick han ner i fartställning för att prova trycka på ännu mer och då började han att sitta och kolla under armhålan efter mig istället för över axeln. Han var mer intresserad av var jag var än det som skedde framför. Inga problem med att hänga på och jag hade tanke på om jag skulle dra om honom eftersom jag fick sakta ner lite vid halva backen... när vi var 30m ifrån toppen så slog jag av på takten och det börjar plana ut så fick han sig en liten läxa att det är något speciellt när man ligger ner, även uppför. Han svängde tyvärr av efter halva utförsbacken på Tranebergsbron, annars så hade han fått sig ett smakprov vad som händer nerför och på raksträckor med en tjockis på liggcykel. Detta efter att inte ha cyklat på 4veckor efter att ha haft problem med ena knät. :)
Näst sista gången in fick ett fruntimmer känna på detta när man kommer ifrån en backe med liggcykel och får med sig farten uppför "puckeln", att det inte behövs så mycket i trampväg för att snabbt passera med en liggcykel... Så det gäller att inte vingla allt för mycket på en cykelbana då min filosofi är att det kommer alltid en snabbare idiot bakom... ;)
Så att beroende på "var" man kommer ifrån så är det generellt att man är långsamamre i visas backar, beroende på ens teknik och styrka.
Men snackare vi om de som tävlar på landsvägsracer så hinner jag inte med, men däremot de "vanliga" Svensson med dyra racercyklar för pendling är inte några konstigheter eller då cyklar med elassist. Så allt beror på vad och vilka man jänför sig med.
Så måste det ju vara. Där jag bor och cyklar finns det tyvärr inte så mycket sånt. Lång, flack uppförsbacke sänker ju farten på hojen obönhörligt, även om man hade bra fart innan. Och tyvärr ligger ofta korsningar och svängar strax före uppförsbacken, så att man inte kan ta fart utan istället får börja från stillastående.
Man får jobba sig för att hålla ner vikten på velomobilen och för att skapa en bra sittvinkel där man får mycket kraft mot tramporna, och inte för högt placerat vevlager, då blir man väl bättre i backen. Och snabbare i starten. Och mer lättmanövrerad i stan.
Ojdå, svaret var på Anders post, men det kom in efter MacTommys...
Min avsikt var mest att peka på att vi inte ska skriva att liggcyklar aldrig är snabbare i uppförsbackar. Det är väl i första hand i de backar, där man på en ståcykel skulle ha ställt sig upp, som liggcykeln kommer till korta.
Men åter till velomobilerna och en kort fråga: Velomobiler är ju oftast 3-hjuliga. Men kallar man också en tvåhjulig "inklädd" cykel för velomobil? Jag har för länge sen sett en bild på en tvåhjulig Leitra (en tysk tror jag det var). Var den fortfarande en velomobil? Är en Lightning F40 en velomobil? Eller är den mer "cykel" än den tvåhjuliga Leitran?
Just möjligheten att ordna väderskydd i någon form borde ju vara liggcyklarnas stora möjlighet. Att "klä in" en vanlig cykel är ju i stort sett omöjligt. Tanken på väderskydd lämnar mig inte någon ro, men jag har inte kommit på något riktigt bra ännu. Det får ju inte bli klumpigt och tungt! I diskussionen på Ecoprofile såg jag uppgifter om velomobiler på 11-12 kilo! Det vore nåt!

Angående velomobiler är min erfarenhet att lätta, lättrullande cyklar ger en roligare cykelupplevelse även om tunga velomobiler kan vara väl så snabba. Att det är kul och avkopplande att cykla kan bidra till uthålligheten. Eftersom luftmotståndet är så katastrofalt dåligt på en cykel så ger troligen en kåpa som primärt är för väderskydd även betydligt lägre luftmotstånd - man brukar säga att till och med en soptunna på en cykel som kaross gör den snabbare (både cykeln och soptunnan). Soptunna är ett dåligt exempel, men ger en fingervisning. Jag menar att superlätta skal som främst ger väderskydd kan ge ökad fart trots att de inte har optimalt lågt luftmotstånd, eftersom de är lätta och ändå sänker luftmotståndet på cykeln.

Tvåhjulig velomobilinspiration kan man få från mc-världen. EcoMobile är en tvåhjulig "inbyggd" motorcykel byggd på BMW-komponenter. Ej ram, byggd som ett flygplan - monocoque - dvs skalet utgör den bärande delen. Stödhjulen fälls ut automatiskt vid låg fart och fälls upp när farten ökar. Skickar med en liten bild.
Om man gör en motsvarande velomobil kan man skippa hydrauliken och låta stödhjulen falla ner med "spärr" under en viss hastighet. Uppfällningen kunde vara lika enkel - att t ex frigöra "nedåtspärren" och ha "spärr" åt andra hållet, så att första nerlägget trycker upp stödhjulen.
"MunzoTT-varianten kan väl också vara ok, med manuell "spärr", men då gäller det att inte glömma sig!
Jag har ju testat med små fasta stödhjul en bit ovanför marken för vinterkörning med låg liggis och det funkar bra när man kör omkull - händer ofta på is och grus - men gör vanliga svängar lite komplicerade eftersom de begränsar nedlägget.
Ja, superlätta skal som t ex Hase Klimax lätta väv på tunna spröt är attraktivt! Spar vikten av ett regnställ dessutom. och man kan ha tunnare kläder när man har vindskydd.
Jag håller med om att man kan trycka på kraftigt på en liggcykel, både när man tar spjärn mot sätet och när man har ett stabilt styre att hålla sig i. Som t ex på min LWB med USS. På den ligger jag ju rätt flackt, så styret funkar bra att hålla i för att inte åka uppåt på sätet. Och så tar jag också backarna bra med den, trots endast två växlar!
Jag har visserligen inte ekonomiska och utrustningsmässiga förutsättningar att bygga en liggcykel nu, men jag funderar och tänker friskt likväl.
En tanke jag har när det gäller tvåhjulingar är att ha två stödhjul, men med långslagig och mjuk fjädring och med hjulen monterade en bit upp från marken. På det viset blir det inte en plötslig kontakt när man lägger cykeln ner i en kurva så att stödhjulet tar i, utan det ger efter och följer med upp lite utan att nämnvärt hindra lutningen. Men samtidigt blir fjädringen progressivt hårdare ju mer man lutar, så att den vid en viss vinkel i praktiken är likvärdigt med ett fast stödhjul. På så vis skulle man kunna få till en tvåhjuling med stödhjul, utan att man förlorar möjligheten att manövrera normalt i kurvor.
Fjädringen skulle kunna göras i form av vertikala fjädrar/stötdämpare eller så som de flesta lätta flygplan har - stålblad som böjer sig, med hjulet i änden. Stålbladet är hyfsat aero redan från början, så förlusten till luftmotståndet blir inte särskilt stort. Om man inte lyckas med balansen mellan stålbladets spänst och behovet av att lägga ner cykeln effektivt i kurvorna, kan man välja ett hårdare stålblad och sätta fast det med gångjärn vid "skrovet". Fjädringen löser man sen med hjälp av elastiska band, och med ett hårt stopp i form av en stålvajer. Den grundprincipen används för t ex Piper Cub. Ytterligare en fördel är att det är en lättviktig lösning och att den går att ta bort snabbt om man cyklar utan kåpa och/eller inte vill ha stödhjul.
Stålblad+elastiskt band-lösningen ger även möjlighet till att utnyttja stödhjulen som verkliga stödhjul vid stillastående och låg fart. Om gångjärnen tillåter rörelse fritt neråt, så kan man göra en spak i "cockpit" som drar i de elastiska banden (och även den fasta stålvajern) och spänner upp dem, vilket tvingar ner stödhjulen. Spaken skulle kunna låsas i det läget för att ge kontinuerlig stabilitet vid stillastående/parkering. När man ska iväg från stillastående bara man trampar igång och långsamt släpper spaken och övergår gradvis till tvåhjulig drift, utan att vingla det minsta.
Om man ändå bygger en full kåpa runt den tvåhjuliga delen, så kan man sätta hjulkåpor på stödhjulen så att man minskar deras luftmotstånd en del. Hjulen behöver inte vara stora. Jag föreställer mig nåt liknande barnvagnshjul. Kanske 15-25 cm i diameter.
Jag föreställer mig att en sån lösning är betydligt enklare mekaniskt än varje form av fartberoende mekanism för att fälla in/ut stödhjul. Vikten man sparar kan säkert kvittas mot en del av luftmotståndet man får av att alltid ha stödhjulen utfällda.
En smal kåpa runt ett tvåhjuligt fordon är ändå så mycket bättre aerodynamiskt än motsvarande kåpa runt typiska trehjuliga fordon (där kåpan omfamnar alla hjul), att även okåpade stödhjul förmodligen ändå inte försämrar tillräckligt för att "nolla" vinsten.

Intressant jämförelse med sportflygplanens landningsställ. Det återstår nog att testa med flexibla stödhjul. Min erfarenhet från vinterns praktiska prov är att man har två motstridiga behov att ta hänsyn till:
1) När man "kör omkull" får inte stödhjulet ta i vid för stor lutning, för då blir det både obehagligt och svårt att "styra upp" på två hjul igen.
2) Vid vanlig kurvtagning behöver man kunna lägga ner mer än vad stödhjulen på lämplig "omkullkörningshöjd" medger.
Om detta kan lösas med fjädrande stödhjul återstår att testa. Den metod jag har tillämpat har ju varit att inte köra för fort i svängarna och dessutom luta överkroppen inåt, vilket har gått bra att göra tack vare stabilt USS. Men det går ju inte om man har en smal kåpa.
Stödhjulen behöver inte vara stora - de jag råkade ha i skrotlådorna är max 15 cm i diameter, helgjutna dessutom. Det skulle säkert gå med ännu mindre hjul t ex skatebordhjul, åtminstone om det är omkullkörning pga grus och isfläckar vi vill gardera oss emot. Min erfarenhet är dock att det är när bakhjulet skär i snö på ställen där inte plogningen kommit ner mot asfalten, som man oftast kör omkull. (Detta gäller LWB med lågt belastat framhjul)
Fjädermekanismen skulle ganska enkelt kunna vara justerbar i styrka så man kan ändra detta utifrån behov genom att lägga på extra stålblad när man vill ha den styvare, ungefär som på en fjäderhammare (fjädern ses överst på den här bilden: http://carlotta.gotlib.goteborg.se/zoom/verkstadsindustri/GIM_7879.jpg - väldigt gammal hammare, men tydigaste bilden på själva fjädern som jag hittade vid en snabb sökning)
Problemet som jag kan se med fjädrande konstruktioner är att behoven är totalt motstridiga. Vid vanlig kurvtagning är kraften liten på det inre stödhjulet, som ska fjädra uppåt. Vid omkullkörning är det mer brutalt. Kraften är plötslig och stor. Då vill man inte ha kraftig nedfjädring och allra minst att den leder till en rekyl.
Nu kör jag kanske väldigt vårdslöst, men redan med mycket stabila och fasta stödhjul så händer det ibland att den första brutala kontakten på ena sidan följs av en likadan när cykeln kastas över på andra sidan. Detta ganska dramatiska förlopp skulle i värsta fall kunna förstärkas av fjädrande stödhjul. Därför får inte stödhjulen sitta för högt, för om lutningsvinkeln blir för stor, så förstärker det problemet. Det skulle i allra värsta fall kunna leda till en slags "highsider" dvs att man välter över stödhjulet!
Om vi sedan håller oss till att diskutera tvåhjuliga "velomobiler" (om nu en velomobil kan vara tvåhjulig?) så måste ju stödhjulen klara vanliga stopp med helst liten lutningsvinkel. Så någon form av låsmekanism är nödvändig. Kan fungera som t ex på Munzo TT, där man ju låser tiltningen manuellt.
Vi har alltså tre vinklar och låsningar att jobba med:
1) liten/ingen vinkel och fast låsning vid vanliga stopp,
2) något större vinkel och mycket stark låsning för omkullkörning som inträffar pga "hjulskärning" och sladd vid färd rakt framåt
3) stor vinkel och lågt motstånd vid nedlägg i kurva.
Fall 3 kan dessutom övergå i fall 2 om man tappar väggreppet och kör omkull i en kurva. Så även fall 3 måste ha ett fast stopp när nedlägget övergår till omkullkörning. Det fasta stoppet för omkullkörning vid kurvtagning får i så fall motsvara max nedlägg.
En streamliner (tvåhjulig velomobil) löste det genom att stödhjulet drogs ut via en vajer med en ring i ena änden som hakades på en krok. Vajern var kraftig, vanlig bromsvajer användes inte utan jag tror något för flygplan. Med den tekniken skulle man kunna ha de tre lägena på stödhjulet, och har man viss utväxling skulle man kanske till och med orka räta upp en cykel till ett högre läge vid behov.

En sån har ett antal hack som spärrar och som löses genom att man vrider och skjuter fram handbromskryckan. Jag har säkert någon sådan liggande i lådorna med veteranbilsdelar. Så när vintern närmar sig är det bara att börja bygga! EcoMobilens hydraulik kan på en lätt 2-hjulsvelomobil ersättas av enkel och lättviktig mekanik.

Den överväldigande majoriteten av alla cyklister bor på platser där vinterväglag inte existerar som begrepp.

Tänkte tipsa om en liten artikel jag skrev 2003 om Rolf Åkerberg och hans cyklar. Bland annat hade han byggt en streamliner i plywood med luckor för benen som han kunde stänga inifrån.

Helt sant, men det är lika riskabelt att köra omkull på grus. Mina värsta omkullkörningar har varit på sådant underlag. När det är snö och is är faran mer uppenbar och då passar man sig.
Sen kan jag konstatera att jag uppenbarligen bor på en plats där vinterväglag inte skrämmer pendlarcyklister. När det var snö och minus 15 grader i vintras var det ändå lika många cyklar vid resecentrum som bilar! Och cykelhandlarna talar om omfattande försäljning av dubbdäck.
Min erfarenhet är dock att liggcykel inte är särskilt bra när det är snö. Motståndet från snön gör att det går så pass tungt att man ändå inte får del av liggcykelns fördel med lågt luftmotstånd. Jag kör LWB med stödhjul när det är mestadels rent från snö, men när det är isfläckar, risk för svarthalka/isbark, lösgrus och enstaka ställen med snö/modd där skärning kan hända. När det är mycket snö kör jag vanlig väldubbad ståcykel.
Men om man bygger en tvåhjulig velomobil och inte vill ha luckor för fötterna, så måste man ju ha stödhjul, som fälls ner och dras upp, på enklast möjliga sätt. Om de också kan ta emot vid omkullkörning, så är det ju en bonus. En omkullkörning med en tvåhjulig velomobil är inte riskfri, med tanke på att man då fortsätter att glida en bra bit på skalet, kanske ut i biltrafiken eller annat hotfullt.
Att ha stödhjul på lämplig höjd för eventuella omkullkörningar är ju samtidigt ett skydd för att man tippar vid stopp, om man råkar glömma dra ner stödhjulen. Kanske ska man ha "normalläget" för stödhjulen på den höjd som skyddar mot omkullkörning och aktivt frigöra dem vid svängar när man vill lägga ner mer.
Man kan också tänka sig normalläga för stödhjul som inte är i vägen för svängar men med möjlighet att dra upp ekipaget med vajern ifall man glömmer fälla ut stödhjulet eller helt enkelt trillar omkull, t ex i en skarp sväng.
Luckor för fötterna är en enkel teknik men då måste man klicka i och ur fötterna. Det är otroligt bekvämt ifall man slipper den komplikationen och det ger också snabbare och mindre vinglig start.

Helt korrekt, jag har öppningar för fötterna på min trehjuliga velomobil för "sten-och-flinta-back". Däremot kan en tvåhjulig velomobil (är streamliner det etablerade begreppet?) dessutom ha fördel av reglerbart stödhjul, så länge det inte väger för mycket. Start och stopp torde bli så mycket enklare då och mycket mer uppmärksamhet kan ägnas trafiken och att få fart.
På en hemsida använde en person handen för att stötta streamlinern vid start och stopp, men erfarenheterna här är väl att det är svårt att få det att funka riktigt smidigt, i alla fall stoppet kräver en del, medan starten är krävande då man stöttar med foten istället.

Lucka för fötterna måste man nog ha ändå, om man ska kunna backa. Hur gör man annars om man råkat hamna för långt ut i en korsning och måste bak några meter?
Helt korrekt, jag har öppningar för fötterna på min trehjuliga velomobil för "sten-och-flinta-back". Däremot kan en tvåhjulig velomobil (är streamliner det etablerade begreppet?) dessutom ha fördel av reglerbart stödhjul, så länge det inte väger för mycket. Start och stopp torde bli så mycket enklare då och mycket mer uppmärksamhet kan ägnas trafiken och att få fart.
På en hemsida använde en person handen för att stötta streamlinern vid start och stopp, men erfarenheterna här är väl att det är svårt att få det att funka riktigt smidigt, i alla fall stoppet kräver en del, medan starten är krävande då man stöttar med foten istället.
Skulle man inte ha en kåpa som undertill består av tyg med två slitsar där man kan få ut benen?
Kan nog vara bra som reserv, för backning och kanske också när man kliver ur och i. Men med tanke på att man vid vanlig lågräser ibland slänger ner fötterna hastigt när man är nära att välta vid låg fart/start, så får det inte vara för krångligt. Lightning F40 har väl något i den stilen?
Med "hål i botten" får man dock passa sig så att man inte råkar ut för det som kan hända på en trike, att man råkar få ner foten vid fart och den "fastnar" mot marken och tvärbalken kör på vaden. Benbrott har inträffat!
Då tänker du på tadpoletrike, Anders? John Tetz löste det problemet - också - genom att flytta fram tvärstaget så att man kan ha fötterna bakom det.
Nu har jag inte kört velomobil... det närmsta var när jag provade jaga ikapp "pappasmurf" i WAV001... och det gick inte så bra... ;)
...detta med hål för fötterna... Hur många befintliga velomobiler har det? Jag skulle personligen planera min körning bättre om jag inte hade någon möjlighet att backa, bara för att slippa kliva ur och putta bak den...
