Greg Egan: Incandescence James Morrow: The Philosopher's Apprentice Neal Asher: Cowl Sarah Zettel: Reclamation (wan Locus-priset för bästa första roman) Tricia Sullivan: Maul James Morrow: Towing Jehovas Steven Brust & Emma Bull: Freedom & Necessity

Greg Egan: Incandescence
If the world of SF were a stock market then Greg Egan would be a blue chip company. Hugely respected and a doyen of the Hard SF scene, he is not what you would call unpredictable. Incandescence, his first novel in six years, is as blue chip as ever in that not only does it give you what you would expect from a Greg Egan novel, it has also prompted a number of equally predictable reviews that have lavished hundreds of words upon the trite received opinion "nice ideas, shame about the characters, plot and prose." I call this a received opinion as I do not think it is in the least bit true; Incandescence is a thought-provoking story about science as a community and as a part of the community.
Neal Asher: Cowl
The past, revisited. Cowl is a dark, brooding time-travel novel, full of graphic violence and characters willing to go to extremes for what they believe in. There is a war going on, a war fought through shifting time-lines and more-or-less probable versions of reality. The stakes are the future, and past of humanity. The problem is trying to figure out who, if anyone, is telling the truth.
Sarah Zettel: Reclamation (wan Locus-priset för bästa första roman)
Well, that doesn't give any idea how good this book is. It is classic action SF: exciting adventure and great aliens with well-thought alien, and human, psychology. Eric, Arla and their supporters are well-drawn, convincing characters. I have to say that this is better than Zettel's next novel "Fool's War".
What's it got? faster-than-light travel, artificial intelligence, telekinesis, tough girls, bad guys and big guns.
Tricia Sullivan: Maul
All the elements of this novel work very hard all the time, carrying not only a complex plot and fascinating ideas about microbiology, but a heavy satirical charge aimed at contemporary culture and also at SF itself. That it manages so well and is so entertaining is testament to Sullivan's skill and intelligence. I haven't enjoyed a book so much in a long time. /Justina Robson
