NEWS for the 1.9 release Optimized C implementation of arcfour. Optimized x86 implementations of arcfour and sha1. Improved benchmark program. Fixed bug in the rsa-encrypt example program. Fixed bug in make install, some of the header files were forgotten. Portability fixes. Fixes to make Nettle compile on systems without gmp. This version has been tested on GNU/Linux, Solaris, HPUX and AIX. The shared library is intended to be binary compatible with nettle-1.8. Only the minor version number of the shared library is increased. Available at ftp://ftp.lysator.liu.se/pub/security/lsh/nettle-1.9.tar.gz (It will appear at hte usual http location as well, once the dust has settled after the installation of the new lysator webserver). (Micro) optimizations.

After being prodded by Jonas Walldén, who showed me how to speed up the C implementation of arcfour by 50%, I've been spending a few hours on micro optimizing arcfour and sha1. Benchmark figures below are on my P4 laptop. First, arcfour: Original C version: 47 MB/s Improved C version: 43 MB/s [1] x86 assembler: 160 MB/s [1] So this is actually a slowdown on my machine. Jonas reports a 50% speedup on G4, and a smallish x86 speedup too. I think the new code should be faster on all cpu:s with a decent number of registers. For sha1, the difference is smaller, Original C version: 64 MB/s x86 assembler: 80 MB/s Now, I'm by no means an x86 guru. I've tried to get a small instruction count, and fit as many variables as possible into registers. I haven't attempted to do any clever instruction scheduling. So if anybody with more x86 experience could have a look at the code, that is much appreciated. Support for systems without alloca or inttypes.h

I've checked in some changes to make nettle compile on systems which lack alloca, and on systems which lack inttypes.h. For systems without alloca, some arbitrary limits have been placed on the input of a few functions, but I hope that won't be a problem in practice. As I don't have access to any systems that have these problems, I'll appreciate if Simon and any other people that have seen the problems could try it out and see if it works. As some shared but crucial files are not stored in the nettle corner of the cvs, the recommended way of cvs access is to check out the entire lsh tree, as per the instructions at http://www.lysator.liu.se/~nisse/lsh, run the top-level ./.bootstrap script (which sets up a few important symlinks and runs .bootstrap scripts in subdirectories), and then descend into the src/nettle directory for a standard ./configure && make there.
