I've been trying to remember how it was done in the subtitles here, but it's such a long time ago that my memory fails me. All crew conversation must have been in the familiar, though, as it would have sounded very stilted otherwise. Marian

Ships (was Crossovers)

Julia mentioned the names of the spaceships in Iain Banks novels. I really like those. The 'Excessive Use Of Force' the 'Anticipation of a New Lover's Arrival' the 'Very Little Gravitas Indeed'. So much more interesting than the 'Enterprise' or (I hate to admit) the 'Liberator'. So much more evocative than 'Lexx' or 'Moya'. I would like to rename Scorpio the 'This Time It's Personal', while Servalan's ship should be the 'Maximum Power' of course, and Travis would rename the ship he steals at the end of Trial the 'No More Mr Nice Guy'. I'm torn as to a good name for the Liberator though. I think Avon's default would be the formal. No idea which he'd use for the situation in "Blake" as he believed the betrayal to be from someone very close indeed. But I can't stand strangers adressing me by first name,e specialy to sell me something, and that's the English equivalent to informal/formal. As Ellynne has pointed out also, Snape is a good substitute or equivalent to Avon, and he uses "Mr." and "Miss" in addressing his students, which other teachers are less likely to do.

The similarities with Andromeda and Blake's 7 were too close I believe to have been coincidence. There were even plot similarities in earlier episodes, though they also did a straight Borg rip off and not as good. The first season of Andromeda was OK but nothing over special, though there were a lot of unanswered questions to tempt us with. Season two though is really rocking with some very good episodes and an arc. There is no Andromeda this Monday on Sky. As we have been having these episodes at the same time as the US (and sometimes ahead), does anyone know if this is because the US is in a mid-season break? What I think is making season two better is that Dylan is showing a darker side now he is faced with a real enemy. The fact that he is making nova bombs, which he politically opposed in all circumstances in season one, is something, and that he his keeping it secret from the crew is something else. Unfortunately, I've never been in any doubt that Tyr would always find some excuse for being noble against his chosen philosophy, but once or twice, things have been quite good. There have been occasions where, instead of pulling some ludicrous plan out of his sleeve, Dylan has had to choose the lesser of two evils, and that helps. I do get annoyed by the way random characters (Harper, Trance, Rev) just disappear for whole episodes, sometimes with hardly a comment. The problem with Andromeda, more than anything else, is that Dylan, as played by Sorbo, is a wholesome hero.
