There's a Helen and a Hellen on the list. Steve, you've been referring to Hellen as Helen. I don't go to Redemption as it's a bit far from California. Baycon, otoh, was lovely. Wish I'd been in better shape, but the dances were terrific, my costumes were recognized more often than I expected, and I got to meet Julia Jones, who kindly allowed me to borrow a few slash zines so I could see what all the fuss was about. (Let the brainwashing commence!) Actually, all the stories I had the opportunity to read or skim were a cut above the average of fanfic I've encountered, when it comes to pure use of language. I found The Birds and The Bees terribly funny, as it sent up 3 things I'm familiar with (Aristophanes, Cole Porter, and B7). I also saw enough to realize that what I'm *not* interested in with slash isn't any different from what I'm not interested in in het-- reading about sex, for me, is rather like reading about sports... to appreciate the story, I may need to know who scored, but I don't have much interest in the details of how it was done. Aside from the parody, it looked like most of the stories were 'character-junkie' type; they got more into exploring feelings and relationships than accomplishing outside tasks. Methinks I'm less character junkie than I thought, because I as I read I thought "Good story, but not really Blake's 7-- we need some Fed lackeys to invade now, or a call from the flight deck about a wierd floating thingie". Mind, ithe writing was good; I just also saw the point about fanon diverging from canon. Enough burbling, Helen

Nexus

Could those of you going to Nexus (and if not, why not as it's a really good weekend and has a B7 guest to boot) please start thinking about books for Oxfam? I'll be selling SF books for Oxfam at Nexus (probably in the dealer's room, but possibily elsewhere when the dealer's room is shut, if there's a suitable space in the bar area). I'd appreciate it if people could bring along donations of sellable books. We asked this at Redemption and had some really good condition books on crime, decorating, stress-management, history, SF and all sorts of subjects which I was able to take back and sell in the local shop. The shop sells around 130 books a week (not counting the children's books which my friend Angie looks after) and we're forever in desperate need of new stock. Good condition paperback novels and all non-fiction books are always welcome. We also accept collectables and sell these at a realistic price. If donations are brought to the dealers room, they can be given to my husband Richard who is easily recognised by the ginger-biscuit colour beard. We've had a couple of large boxes of SF donated recently, so we hope to have a really good collection of books for fans to buy and we'll keep changing the books on display as there's too many to have them all out at once. I would think with the new show being made about Iris Murdock's life and the fact that Ian Holm is a high profile actor these days that there is a very good chance of getting The Bell also released on video. However, it will not happen unless the BBC and video companies think that there is an interest in it. So, please, think about writing the BBC and requesting that The Bell be made available on video.
