He hates the idea of being manipulated. He also complains when he thinks Blake is manipulating the others. So he tells himself that by acting as if he's no one's friend, no one will follow him for the 'wrong' reasons. So, in essence, I think the opposite of the original poster. Avon *does* care what people think of him, in the sense that humans are social animals and one can' help but have a little desire to be well thought of. But he *tries* not to use what he knows of human emotion to get what he wants. Of course, I'm probably projeecting a lot of myself onto this. Had a discussion with Allan on Sunday about whether I should have told a friend I was worried I was hurting his feelings. Helen

Gestalt, isn't it? Well, it's a good question, Tony, and I haven't seen it here yet myself. Well, I have: Avon's distrust of people; Servalan's poise, when I feel like it; when I'm excited, I can have Dayna's youthful energy; I sometimes run off at the mouth like Vila; I can go into lecture mode like Blake (or Avon); and I actually think I can do telepathy sometimes, but only with certain people, and empathy with most, so that's Cally-esque. I like lots of clothes, and I'd like to be able to fly aircraft, so I guess that's what I have in common with Jenna. As far as Soolin goes... the ablity not to be noticed when I'm being quiet? Oh dear, I think I may have Tarrant's competitive streak. I can be as irritable and impatient as ORAC. I can't think of any comparison to the other computers or Gan, personalitywise. I' LIKE to have: Avon's way with gadgets, Vila's hand skills, and Blake's focus on a goal.

Many conquerors allowed for looting, both individual and by the army at large. Of course, it's always a PR nightmare. This may be one of the ways in which the Federation _would_ show restraint. It's easier to say you're motivated by a good cause if you're not carting off the silverware. Then again, medieval tradition allowed for the sacking and raping of a city taken by force but not one that surrendered. Also, one of the pragmatic ideas behind POWs is that people are more likely to surrender (rather than fight to the death) if it gives them a chance to survive. The Federation may have made very brutal examples of some places but either not allowed soldiers to rob them or else didn't allow soldiers _as individuals_ to rob them. OTOH, I've always suspected there was a story behind Jenna's necklace. Either her mother gave it to her or its a semi-cybernetic link (not actually wired on) that nonmilitary pilots wear (or could Tarrant be hiding his?). Vila says in _Redemption_ I think he would know in his head that it *wasn't* personal - Avon would almost certainly have done the same no matter who else was on the shuttle.
