Out of print fan fiction

Merry Christmas everyone. Could I put in a request - if your fan fiction was published in a magazine which is now out of print, would you please post it somewhere on the web (preferably Judith's Library, as that makes it easy to find)? It's very frustrating to read rapturous reviews of something that as a newbie, geographically isolated from long time fans, I have no hope of obtaining. I think the feeling of 'deprivation' is less to do with current stories, of which there's a fair amount available online (through the websites and mailing lists), and others that go into zines (and the recent crop of zines has IMO been particularly high-quality) so both net and print people *do* get a share of the available pie (I know the feeling of "but I want it all!!!" but Mother always told you to share, didn't she? :-)). It's the older stories - the ones that were on those PGP lists that started this discussion :-) that make the print side look so much bigger. Blakes 7 is an older fandom and the simple fact is that a lot of good stories are in older zines, quite a few are by people who aren't in the fandom any more anyway, so getting the right to put them up (from writer and editor) then getting it *done* (someone has to then do the work. I'm typing a long Helen Parkinson story out for Judith at the minute, 'cause I don't have a scanner) is going to take time, and may turn out to be impossible. OTOH, there is another kind of buzz in *finally* getting hold of one that you've heard about for ages and have been looking for (I got the 2nd & 3rd parts of the 'Mind of Man is a Double-Edged Sword' trilogy months *before* I managed to get my hands on the first part. As a newbie to the list I can see why other newbie's think it's not fair that all fan fiction is not available on line there seems to be so much I have missed. However as a librarian I also see the point made by Kathryn Andersen and fully support her, you don't see many"professional" writers giving away their royalties by publishing online (and by professional I mean they make their living by it, many fan fic writers are more professional than some best selling authors). So Kathryn I am asking nicely when you have time will you please put your out of print stories on Katspace I would love to read them and like the others I am geographically isolated in the valleys of South Wales. If anyone out there knows of secondhand book shops in Newport Cardiff or bristol and at a pinch Swansea that sell Blake's 7 fanzines please let me know. I'm sure several other people have already mentioned this. Judith Proctor sells items the old fashioned way--via snail mail ordering as well as via internet ordering. To assume you can only buy from Judith via the internet is wrong. Various zines and newsletters in the past have carried her sale lists and prices. All anyone needs is Judith's phone number or snail mail address to ask for a new printed zine list or merchandise list. And Judith's snail mail address has appeared in lots of things over the years. Actually, until I got online a little over two years ago I always ordered my items from Judith via snail mail. And I still pay for my items using snail mail. I have yet to use her internet site for paying for anything I have ordered from her. And I order from her a lot. For instance, I have gotten gotten all the Soldier of Love CDs and Dalek Empire CDs via her. As well as the Blake and Avon figurines. And a bunch of other stuff too. Just this week, I sent Judith's address to a person not on line so that she could get in contact with her concerning merchandise. Joyce

Well, I can only speak as a *non*-expert, having 2 whole stories in zines, 2 short pieces on Judith's website and the usual number of semi-finished burbles scattered all over my hard drive ... The buzz from seeing the first story - 'Christmas Canto' - in Star 4 was absolutely wonderful, I wouldn't have traded it for anything. The second time (for the Blake zine) was just as wonderful, since - not being a last-minute addition - that story got illustrated with Pat Fenech's gorgeous photo-montages :-) It was great fun seeing the shorter pieces up on the web, and I thoroughly enjoy posting fiction to Freedom City and getting immediate feedback, but I would like to have more in print eventually (not that I'm all that sure where to send them, since both of my printed stories were basically by request) just for that buzz. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp.

It is strictly web-based because it is a lot of work printing onto paper. The internet in general will save many a tree, moreover. I write mainly about the B7 women. Just goes to show that one must be careful about making assumptions on even the most basic level, since circumstances differ so much from one area to another. Being from San Francisco, I have unlimited and fast Net access, both business and personal. I dislike travel, so my access to fanfic magazines has been recent, expensive, and limited to those I have found through Judith's inestimable website. So I will vote for on-line. It would not, for instance, bother me at all to subscribe to a fanfic library. The energy and willingness of so many people to voluntarily maintain websites for the pleasure of others awes and amazes me. It only seems fair to compensate those webmasters/authors in some small way. Even the "free" public libraries are only as good as the willingness of taxpayers to support them. For those of you who have posted URL's and other sources for second-hand fanfics, you have my (and I'm sure other newbies') sincere thanks. Contrary to what some might think, such sources are very hard to find. They do not, for instance, show up when I search on Google (the most popular search engine here) for Blakes 7 sites. I would not have discovered the Avon's Club publications without the mention it received on this list earlier this year (prior to their becoming available on Judith's site). BTW, kudos once more to her for helping to maintain their availability; there are some very good stories in the set. I also would like to offer my assistance to those dedicated writers who have old B7 print stories that are too much hassle to convert to e-copy -- of course, I'm assuming there's not TOO many of those! But I have free, if slightly indirect, access to a professional text scanner and a high-quality digital copier, as well as owning an extremely good PC with the Microsoft Word program. I would be happy to assist you in turning them into e-copy. I'm a professional executive assistant (the politically-correct term for a high-level secretary) and proofing/editing copy is all part of my job. Being a fanfic writer myself (although I write about a character named Julian Kestrel, the late and much lamented Kate Ross's Regency dandy-detective creation), I have the utmost sympathy for those who don't wish to put themselves to a large amount of effort for old stories they spent a lot of time slaving over to begin with. Sometimes one wants to go forward and spend one's energy on new projects and ideas instead! -- quite understandable. But still, those of us who are relatively new to B7 fanfic would dearly love to read some of those stories which are either no longer available or extremely difficult to obtain. Should anyone be interested in taking me up on my offer, please contact me off-line and we can work out the details. Since I would be doing this in my spare time I can't promise an immediate turnaround, but there's no reason why a medium-length story (10-20 pages) should take more a few weeks. If the story is short enough, in fact, it would probably be just as easy to retype it, since I also type about 110/wpm. Piece of cake. Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. I'd like to comment that virtually every single one of the 50+ fanzines that Ashton Press ever produced are still available and in-print from the original editor. For those in the USA (or willing to travel), the dealer's room at MediaWest*Con every year is a treasure trove of out-of-print B7 fanzines of every description, being offered at cut-rate prices. Most dealers are fans, and many bring zines they no longer wish to keep out of their own collections to the convention table to sell out of boxes for less than the original price.
