I know I've seen the episode several times, and Servalan did state it clearly, but it seemed rather out of place in the whole story to me. I suppose I didn't feel the connection because, I never thought of it as anything other than just a badly conceived science experiment that showed one possiblity out of innumerable ones.

Also Darrow in his recent interview on SF-UK said that Blake was Avon's only friend. Is it possible that these lines were written by Boucher because he wanted to draw a parallel between the two characters, or more believeably, he had drawn the parallel himself and was writing those lines as a prompt to get over what he wanted when it to came to discussing the script with the producer and the director. I think all fan writers may have done a similar thing in the past, "I can't work this scene out, this is what I have written, but it's not working, do you have any suggestions?" Certainly the idea of Avon shooting Blake three times and then Blake grabbing hold of Avon and saying all that, before dropping down dead, does sound a bit ridiculous. Script approval means exactly what it says. An actor has it written into their contract that they can veto stuff and rewrite stuff they don't like. On Space 1999 this resulted in Barbara Bain insisting that she was always shot in soft focus, and that both she and her husband, Martin Landau, got a certain number of close-ups per episode, and always got the last scene together.
