The Meaning of Liff

I feel sure that someone's pointed this out before, but then again, they might not, so I will. I was flicking through The Meaning of Liff (by Douglas Adams and John Lloyd) and found a reference to Blakes 7. For anyone that doesn't know, the book lists place names along with definitions, the definitions being situations that everyone experiences, but there isn't word for. They're also quite funny. This one is Clackavoid (which isn't on the map in the book) and the definition is: 'Technical BBC term for a page of dialogue from Blake's Seven' And while I'm here, this month's SFX (August) has a page of characters who've been done by more than one actor and they include Travis (they thought Stephen Greif was the best). That's what he says - we don't hear him talk about going to free his friends or feeling responsible for the survivors of his mutiny. Compare this to his "There's a friend of mine out there!" in The Web. There his concern for Avon is uppermost in his mind. Here his prime concern seems to be to get a crew, not that there are friends out there to be rescued. :-) Marian

Vila the Fool

Yeah Ican see Vila as a court fool type chaarcater. Traditionally they could always get away with mouthing off to the ruler where most people would have got their heads whacked off for the privilege. I'm pretty sure none of the others could talk back to Avon as much as Vila does without getting a thump. Leia

Big Brother

Did anyone else catch the fleeting B7 reference on last night's show? The housemates were practising for this week's task and Dean (the only one with a greater than room temperature IQ) made several derogatory remarks about the protective clothing they were required to wear, including the comment that it was "a bit Blake's Seven..." I think he was referring to the shoulder pads which were ever-so slightly Avonish. This has just given me a thought, if the B7 crew were in the Big Brother house - who would nominate who for eviction? Julie Horner
