He was 43. If any of you have any of my fanzines, Warren was responsible for the awesome art you see there on the cover and throughout the fanzines. On my website at: http://victorian.fortunecity.com/literary/196/ there is a page called "Fan Art". I have a few of Warren's pictures up, and now I think I'll add a lot in the next few weeks. For years his art was shown at MediaWest in the artshow (the years I was good and remembered to send it on time) or shown at other fan convention artshows. Many fans have t-shirts of Sentinel, Highlander, Trek, Starsky and Hutch, and the other myriad of fandoms he was in. For those of you who visited my former house during a visit to Vancouver, you would have met Warren, a very tall -- 6 foot, 5 inch -- blond Viking who besides doing fan art, also designed the logo for a Canadian astronaunt on a NASA space flight, and was flown to Florida for the lift off, and then Houston Control for the event. I'm still a little in shock. I spent the evening on the phone calling his friends and letting them know. Warren lived with my husband and I for two years, then a few years later, lived with Cathy, Shane, and I for four years. We went to high school together, so for thirty years he's been a part of my life. Please pass this email on to any other fan groups. Warren was especially known in Classic Trek, Sentinel, Dr Who, and Man from UNCLE, but he also did art for Starsky & Hutch (3 fanzines covers), Professionals (several covers), Highlander (many covers), also covers for fanzines for Red Dwarf, James Bond, I Spy, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Kung Fu:TLC, Robin of Sherwood, Blake's 7, Babylon Five, Forever Knight, Xena, Hercules, Star Trek Voyager, Prisoner, Star Wars, Wild Wild West... and others I've forgotten off the top of my head. A few days ago, I just sent off a package to Mysti Frank, so she could sell his prints on her website and at conventions, as I get requests for the prints still. His death yesterday was a blow to us all here. Now, I'll be donating his profits to the Canadian Epilepsy Foundation. Please say a prayer for his parents, his brother and sister and their families, as well as his many friends in the fan community. Thanks. So they talk about best shipboard rations, what the weather was like on such-and-such when they were there. Maybe talk politics, too, because Jenna is interested if not convinced by idealism. Cally and Tarrant: this one is tough. They might like some of the same games (after all, we saw Space Monopoly) and talk about strategy or something. She might try getting him to talk about himself-- since she can't read minds, she might feel like getting people to talk is a bit of a substitute, especially, because she objects to Tarrant's behavior on some occaissions, she might be more curious than usual as to why. Gan and Avon: If you go with Avon as a chef, as some do, they might have chats in the kitchen. Or they might discuss music. Gan seemed to have a sort of music-video walkman in one episode and INTx's tend to have a strong affinity for music. Dayna and Vila: You know, they are the only two I could picture watching really bad movies together, throwing popcorn at the set and even having a belching contest. She's young enough to be silly if she lets go and he likes to act juvenile.

OK, well obviously I'm only talking about what sounds plausible in a story. But the idea is that you can imitate a more earth-like environment, so you don't have to invent technological fixes for helping people overcome non-earthlikeness. An example would be that you can have ordinary windows that look out at a static view, instead of having to invent the kind of static-projection system that Harriet mentioned. Or you could keep atmosphere cooped around an asteroid, like in 'the little prince', and even make it pop around where you want, which is a very low-tech sort of space ship, with chickens living on it or whatever. How Green Was My Valley

I just got my tape of How Green Was My Valley and have watched the first episode now. If I'm any judge, Joyce is going to be in raptures when she sees her copy. Not only does it have a young Gareth, slim and bearded, but it's a damn good drama. This dates from the days when the BBC knew how to let a story tell itself. It's slow-paced and very well acted. The sets are few in number, but you tend not to notice because it's the characters who carry the story. It's set in a Welsh mining village and I suspect some Americans may well have trouble following the Welsh accents, especially in scenes set in and around the mines, but the domestic scenes are be pretty easy to follow. When in doubt, follow the music of the voices - Welsh accents do tend to sound wonderfully lyrical. You get your ear attuned after a while and then the accents become easier. It's the story of a Welsh mining family, especially the youngest son who was injured and unable to walk for several years. The family become close friends with the new preacher, played by Gareth, and events play out against the background of the chapel and the hypocracy of the elders. If the other episodes are as good as the first, then it'll be well worth it.
