I, Penny Dreadful, do hereby vow to continue to post smartass remarks, sexual innuendo, references to food and clothing, comments about character, in-universe rationalizations, obscure in-jokes, sickmaking cuteness, flippancy, irreverence, irrelevance, tastelessness, and/or whatever subjectively stupid thought happens to flit through my subjectively shallow little mind, and moreover to continue appending them to whatever thread I deem appropriate. If you (the reader of this post) do not wish to read any of the above, then I suggest that you killfile me at your earliest opportunity. If Calle doesn't wish me to persist in my puerile posting pattern, he can kick me off the list, and I promise not to try and come weaseling back in with a new address. ObB7 (I *do* try): that Avon, boy oh boy, hoohah, was he just poured into those Red Leather Trousers or what? Man alive, I sure would like to Buff Up And Rinse Avon, because as an INTP, according to Myers-Briggs, I identify with him more than I do with Blake, who was willing to kill all those penguins in Star One just to prove he was right, and whom I would like to see played by Jim Carrey in The Movie. And moreover, Travis Travis Travis Travis Travis Travis Travis Travis Travis. Adding somewhat frivilously to Helen's comments - The proponents of male-speak, female-speak theories (which goes with that thing about men and women being two alien species, yadda, yadda, yadda, depending on whether or not you buy that [do somedays, don't others, myself]) say that women tend to bond over things like shared feelings but also sharing hurt and comforting each other about it. Now, I'll be the first to admit, this is something that must be handled with care in the B7 universe. I don't quite see Avon and Tarrant sitting down over a large quantity of chocolate and saying things like "And, then, when the Liberator blew up, I just felt so abandoned. I'd given the best years of my life to that ship. Always there for it when it needed extra spark plugs, willing to stay up nights monitoring power levels. And what do I get for it? The one time - the _one_ time - I can't come through, it's just big explosions and goodbye and hope you die on that mutant planet. I just feel so . . . _used_." And Tarrant replying, "Hey, let it out. I'm here for you, man." Pardon a moment. OK, stomach distress with an urge to do something seriously damaging to the keyboard under control. Anyhow, that's not quite them. It should only happen in a story where Vila is having the DTs to end all DTs and hallucinating it. All right, back to the point, which is that h/c may have its place, especially if it spares us the above. However, whether it says something really sick about me or not (I hope not. I really, really hope not) but I am somewhat inclined towards it as a story device. Worse, my impulse is to put one of Avon's friends through Bad Things and make Avon feel guilty about it - which stands to reason since, even if it wasn't his fault, he's good at blaming himself for stuff (IMHO). If the laws of physics were ultimately responsible for hurting someone he didn't admit he cared about, he'd probably blame himself for not having fixed that design defect in the universe before it hurt someone. Although there's no evidence that this is the same Dome as the one we later see Blake living in, it might be a reasonable assumption that they are close? Certainly the landscape we see in TWB looks British, though it's hard to tell in the dark. There's no reason to suppose the other Earth natives came from the same region at all, though the fact that they all speak with similar accents suggests that they might. But I don't think that needing 'classic' suspension of disbelief is an important factor because there are also lots of western series based fandoms and lots of WW2 series based fandoms, neither of which genre requires that type of SoD. Not to mention medical drama based fandoms, sitcom based fandoms, and so on. Really, Neal, I think you are missing the boat when it comes to What Makes A Show fannish. I honestly think it comes down at least 90% to that factor you want to minimize: the Characters. For example, you center a series on someone 1) who is constantly at risk of physical damage/death 2) who faces enemies/rivals who seek to destroy him/her 3) who is witty in a rather terse/cutting way in the face of danger 4) who has an unhappy past 5) who has faults that have caused harm to those s/he loved 6) who is haunted by and angsts over 3 & 4 7) who nevertheless acts as the "good guy" whether reluctantly or not 8) who is beautiful/sexy/handsome 9) who has a unhappy/nonexistent love life despite #7 and you will probably found a fandom. ;-) That's not the only pattern for a character who catches the fannish eye, but it's one of the most potent I think. I would say that depends to a large degree on the importance of the special effect/plot hole to the episode/charcaters in question. That silly lightning flash when they clink cups in Warlord is a momentary thing and therefore forgivable. Travis wrapped in sheets is supposed to be convincing enough to fool the Liberator crew and therefore renders the entire episode dire. The silly machine with painted teeth in Dawn of the Gods is another complete failure because Vila actually seems scared of it - if he'd treated it with the contempt it deserved, no problem. Louise
